Developmental Editing

What is it?

Developmental Editing involves an editor providing feedback on “big picture” issues.

In other words, I’ll look at your pacing, find plot and character inconsistencies, highlight your best moments, and help nudge sections that are lagging behind. In addition, we will talk about your voice, themes, genre expectations, and any other story concerns you have.

What do you get?

  • An Editorial Report, which is a document containing general advice and opinions on what works and what doesn’t in your story.
  • An Annotated Manuscript, which is a version of your manuscript that contains infrequent highlights and comments with specific suggestions or praise.
  • The chance to talk to me about your concerns, style, voice, and choices. Detailed explanations for every type of suggested edit, and the chance to debate alternative solutions if the original doesn’t work for you.
  • At least one re-read of your edited new draft.

Standard fee

My standard rate for Developmental Editing is US$0.03/wd; payable in up to eight monthly instalments. Discounted rates may apply depending on many factors, and the only way to get your accurate total price is to ask for a free, no-strings-attached sample!

Being a newcomer to the literary horror genre, I needed a 'Swiss army knife' in my corner; a developmental editor to beat my unruly manuscripts into submission, a cheerleader to encourage me through uncertain waters, and a publishing insider to help steer my brain babies toward their forever homes. I’m beyond lucky to have found all of those things in Alex. She is a consummate professional with miles of experience in her back pocket who genuinely cares about your creative growth, and about you. I look forward to her edits with the electric excitement of a kid waiting by the mailbox for birthday cards stuffed with cash to arrive. I say this without a shred of hyperbole; the difference between tossing your manuscripts into the void and receiving those glowing acceptance letters is Alex Woodroe.
